How Soundscape Works

Soundscape describes the world around you with sound. You hear each place from the direction it is in, so you learn where things are as well as what they are.

Automatic Callouts

As you walk, Soundscape calls out streets, intersections and places near you. You do not need to do anything. See the Automatic Callouts help page.

Location and Exploration Buttons

The four buttons at the bottom of the home screen describe your surroundings whenever you ask. They are My Location, Around Me, Ahead of Me and Nearby Markers.

Audio Beacon

An audio beacon is a sound that plays from the direction of a place you choose. It shows you where the place is, and you decide how to get there. See the Audio Beacon help page.

Which Way You Are Facing

While you walk, Soundscape uses your direction of travel, so your phone can stay in a pocket or bag. When you stand still, point the top of your phone the way you are facing. Soundscape then uses your phone as a compass. If your phone is locked, or Soundscape is not on the screen, hold your phone flat as well.

Headphones

Stereo headphones give the clearest sense of direction. Soundscape also works through your phone’s speaker.
