Automatic Callouts

As you walk, Soundscape calls out what is near you. You hear each name from the direction of the place. Callouts cover streets, intersections, shops, bus stops, landmarks and your own markers.

Intersections

As you approach an intersection, Soundscape names each road that leaves it. You hear which road goes left, which continues ahead and which goes right.

How Much You Hear

Open the menu and select Settings, then Manage Callouts. Callout Detail has four levels.

Detailed calls out everything nearby.

Simplified leaves out minor paths and service roads, and repeats itself less.

Essential calls out only streets, intersections and landmarks.

Silent makes no automatic callouts. Beacons, routes and the home screen buttons still work.

What You Hear

Manage Callouts has two more settings. Streets and Junctions turns street and intersection callouts on or off. Places to Call Out chooses which kinds of place you hear, such as Public Transit or Food and Drink. Your markers are always called out.

Making Soundscape Quieter

Press previous on your headphone controls. Each press moves one level quieter: Detailed, Simplified, Essential, then Silent. One more press returns to Detailed. See the Using Media Controls help page.

Stopping Soundscape for a While

Select the Sleep button at the top of the home screen. Soundscape stops using your location and makes no sound until you select Wake Up Now. Or select Wake On Leave, and Soundscape wakes up when you leave the place you are in.

In a Vehicle or on a Train

Soundscape notices when you are traveling at vehicle speed. It then stops calling out intersections and nearby shops, because they pass too quickly. Instead it calls out the road you are on, landmarks, stops and stations, rivers and tunnels.
